Carmen Borregales is a Venezuelan clarinetist educated in the internationally renowned music program, EL SISTEMA. She began her studies at age eight, in the city of Coro, and later moved to Caracas to further develop her education. She studied at the Latin American Clarinet Academy under prominent clarinetists Valdemar RodrÃguez, Edgar Pronio, Jorge Montilla, Luis Rossi, Henry Crespo and Gregory Parra. Carmen has participated in many master classes with international masters and soloists such as Luis Rossi, Antony Pay, Alain Damiens, Walter Seyfarth, Eddy Vanoosthuyse, Jonathan Cohler, Paulo Sergio Santos, Charles Neidich, Michel Arrignon, Ronald Van Spaendonck, Evgeny Petrov, Thomas Friedli, Harry Sparnaay, Alessandro Carbonare, among others. In addition to her musical studies, in 2005 Ms. Borregales obtained a Bachelor's degree in Modern Languages from the Metropolitan University in Caracas.
Carmen has qualified for many international clarinet competitions, to include the ICA 2004 Young Artists Competition (Maryland, USA), the 2017 Geneva International Music Competition (Geneva, Switzerland), the ARD 2008 Music Competition in Munich, Germany and the 2009 Carl Nielsen International Music Competition in Odense, Denmark. As a former student of the clarinet maker and soloist Luis Rossi, she obtained a Master's degree in Clarinet Performance from the Simón Bolívar University in 2012. She is currently the Assistant Clarinetist and Principal in charge of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.
Carmen Borregales has also enjoyed an extraordinary career as a teacher. In Venezuela she taught for more than ten years at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music (2003-2016) and at the Latin American Clarinet Academy (2006-2016), as well. In 2015 she visited Haiti as part of a musical mission from EL SISTEMA. There she spent one month working with kids and educating them about the fundamentals of clarinet playing, music theory and orchestral activity, and also teaching the teachers of those students about the Venezuelan music model. She has also taught and performed at international festivals and music schools in Costa Rica (2009 and 2013), in Guatemala (2011), in Portugal (2013) and most recently in Spain (2017).
