Roger Rosenberg's preparation for a stellar career as an A-list bari sax player included an education at Indiana University, The New England Conservatory of Music and, also, under the demanding and inspiring tutelage of players like Phil Woods and composers like Harold Seletsky. He has worked with a "Who's Who" list of jazz greats to include Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Miles Davis, Qunicy Jones, Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Tom Scott, T.S. Monk, Sarah Vaughn, John Scofield, Gerry Mulligan and Eddie Palmieri, as just a sampling of the scores of jazz, Latin and pop heavyweights included on a resume that spans three-plus decades.
Roger is based in New York, where he is in demand for studio sessions, plays on Broadway, teaches, and performs gigs with the Roger Rosenberg Jazz Quartet...that is, when he is not on tour as bari sax man for Steely Dan, a gig that is in its eleventh year. Although Roger did not begin touring with the band until 2006, he also he appeared on Everything Must Go, Fagen's Kamakiriad, Morph The Cat, Sunken Condos, the Grammy-winning Two Against Nature, and Becker's Circus Money. Roger's own CD, Baritonality, was released on Sunnyside Records in 2009 to great reviews.
Accomplished as a saxophonist, Roger also plays clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and flutes. His powerhouse solo voice and swinging ensemble work make him a superb addition to small and large sections alike. Mastery of numerous musical styles and genres make him an obvious and frequent choice for New York session gigs. Roger is also a composer and band leader. Mongo Santamaria's award-winning album, Amanacer, featured Roger as composer and soloist, and in 2000 Jazz key released Roger's first leader CD, Hang Time. His work has been acknowledged by Downbeat, and he has received a NARAS MVP award.
